HF Antenna Systems

Broadband HF antenna systems for NVIS expeditionary communications. No tuner required — works with ALE for automatic frequency selection.

RAVEN HF Expeditionary NVIS Antenna

Broadband folded dipole antenna system optimized for Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) communications in the 1.8–30 MHz HF band. Full-spectrum broadband coverage makes it ideal for ALE (Automatic Link Establishment) operations — the radio automatically selects the optimum frequency without an antenna tuner or coupler. The entire RAVEN expeditionary system deploys in under 5 minutes with less manpower, fewer components, and less weight than traditional HF antenna systems.

Why NVIS for expeditionary HF?

Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) provides 50–1,000 mile regional HF coverage without line-of-sight requirements. Unlike VHF/UHF, NVIS works through mountains, forests, and urban terrain — and unlike SATCOM, it operates without external satellite infrastructure. For command posts in austere or denied environments, NVIS HF is often the only reliable communications method.

Frequently asked questions

Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) is an HF radio propagation technique where the signal is directed nearly straight up, reflects off the ionosphere, and returns to earth within 50–1,000 miles of the transmitter. Unlike VHF/UHF which requires line-of-sight, NVIS works in mountainous terrain, dense foliage, and urban environments. NVIS is the primary HF technique for regional communications in expeditionary command posts when VHF/UHF and satellite links are unavailable, jammed, or degraded.

No. The PTS RAVEN is a broadband design covering the full 1.8–30 MHz HF spectrum. It works with ALE (Automatic Link Establishment) radios such as the AN/PRC-150 and AN/PRC-160 without a separate tuner or coupler. This significantly reduces the number of components required and simplifies field deployment.

The PTS RAVEN antenna supports NVIS HF communications from 0–1,000 miles depending on frequency, time of day, ionospheric conditions, and transmitter power. Regional coverage within the 50–500 mile range is the primary NVIS use case and is reliably achievable under most ionospheric conditions using frequencies between 2–10 MHz. ALE capability on radios like the PRC-150 and PRC-160 automatically selects the optimum frequency for current propagation conditions.

The RAVEN Fly Away Kit packages the RAVEN 150W HF NVIS antenna, 5m mast, feedline, ground plane, and all required components into a compact airline-checkable transit case for rapid global deployment. Two personnel can have HF NVIS comms operational in under 10 minutes. Purpose-built for teams that need HF capability on short notice in austere environments.

PTS offers two integrated antenna mast systems: a 3.5m VHF Squad IAM (ANT-RTL-203500-1-1) for 30–300 MHz operations and a 7m dual-band VHF/UHF IAM-D (ANT-RTL-307005-1) covering 30–88 MHz VHF and 225–512 MHz UHF. Both use bi-stable reeled composite construction that rolls up for compact transport and deploys in seconds to minutes without tools. The masts comply with relevant sections of MIL-STD-810G.

Yes. PTS holds GSA Multiple Award Schedule contract 47QSWA22D008V (NAICS 334220) and CHS-6 contract W15P7T-23-D-0003 (Prime: Leidos). The PTS DLA contract SPE7LX-26-D-0050 covers the SINCGARS PSDS line only. PTS Cage Code: 06AE7. Contact PTS for specific antenna and mast system availability and pricing through these contract vehicles.
